This magnificent broadsword was originally introduced to the British Army in 1828. Sometimes called the 1831 pattern, it was created by the officer's commanding the 93rd Highlanders were carrying, during the Battle of Balaclava of the Crimean War, when they were told: "There is no retreat from here men...you must die where you stand". Facing the onslaught of tens of thousands of Russian cavalry, the Highlanders stood their ground, two ranks deep, and turned back the attack. From this event the phase was coined "The Thin Red Line". By 1868 all officers carried the steel scabbard with it's unique ball tip. This pattern has stood the test of time and is today carried by British, Canadian and other Commonwealth Scottish Regiments.
Blade: Made of AISI 1065 High Carbon tempered Steel which matches the sealed pattern. Why not stainless steel? High Carbon steel has a tensile strength like fighting swords whereas stainless steel is brittle and tends to shatter when struck with force. Therefore if the swords, for example, are used in fencing demonstrations they are designed to withstand reasonable contact with objects. Each double-fullered blade is acid etched with Scottish Infantry pattern markings including the ER II Royal Cypher. Guard: The pierced Glasgow style hilt is plated with bright nickel plating and lined with superfine red wool, trimmed with royal blue edging and ties. The black drip is appropriately wrapped with nickel plated wire. Scabbard: Each two ring steel scabbard is hand finished and brightly nickel plated. In addition it is included in the price of the sword. Not including a scabbard in the price of a sword is simply bad taste. _____________________
